November
18, 2002 - New York, New York What do you get when
you bring together expert medical doctors, sophisticated
videoconferencing equipment, and those devoted to global
development? A dynamic, international pediatric diabetes
symposium! This is precisely what Mount Sinai Medical
School delivered in hosting the 3rd Annual Pediatric
Diabetes Symposium. The international dimension came
together thanks to Mount Sinai's partnership with Medical
Missions for Children and the World Bank's Global Development
Learning Network (GDLN) that provided the international
links.
The Symposium brought together prominent doctors in
the area of pediatric diabetes who presented recent
research they have conducted in the subject, medical
practitioners who presented pediatric diabetes case
studies, and a global audience who directly presented
their questions to the speakers. Dr. Robert Rapaport,
Emma Elizabeth Sullivan Professor and Director of the
Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at
the Mount Sinai School of Medicine who organized the
symposium stated, "We were glad to be able to contribute
the information from our symposium to a broad, global
audience that we hope will be helpful at the local level."
The international audience was greeted by the applause
of the Mount Sinai audience in New York and went on
to make their voice heard through the use of Instant
Messenger which they used to send in comments and questions
during the course of the symposium. The global connection
was made up of the GDLN Distance Learning Center housed
in the Instituto Nacional de Administracion Publica
(INAP) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Hospital
de Hereda in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Hospital
Jaime Mato in Baradero, Dominican Republic, the GDLN
Distance Learning Center housed in Globatel, Inc. in
Quito, Ecuador, Hospital del Niño in Panama City,
Panama, and the GDLN Distance Learning Center housed
in Infocentros in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Frank Brady, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Medical
Missions for Children, who in partnership with the GDLN
Latin American region launched the Health initiative for
the region, has successfully brought together the medical
expertise and content from prominent medical institutions
such as Mount Sinai Medical School to the region. In observing
the event unfold, Frank Brady stated, "it was rewarding
to see the knowledge exchange being conducted on a global
scale and that we were able to bring the latest research
and experience to colleagues in Latin America without
having to fly few people in from all over the world but
instead, reaching significant audiences in their home
countries."
