October
31, 2003 - Washington DC The Technicians of the GDLN
Latin America and Caribbean Region offered a training
session for GDLN Center regional staff - directors, coordinators
and technicians - on videoconference etiquette and microphone
usage. After a monthly meeting in which the technicians
discussed ways in which videoconferencing could be improved,
the group decided that the quality of GDLN LAC sessions
would benefit from providing the center staff with a training
on the applications and different uses of the technical
aspects involved in a videoconference.
The training was developed in a coordinated effort
by the GDLN LAC technicians in topics and areas which
often present challenges during videoconference events.
Based on this assessment a training session was offered
on the following topics:

The training session was an excellent opportunity to
learn first-hand of the technology available to the
GDLN Network and how to effectively apply it. Wilson
Vargas, the Bolivia DLC Technician provided the participants
with an example of how to effectively use the technology
through a live internet-based demo showing how a room's
set-up affects the audio aspects of a videoconference.
In addition, Fernando Felix, Director of GDLN Brazil
shared his center's experience with the regional participants
which led to an dynamic exchange among all participants.
The session was insightful and of great help for all
GDLN LAC staff. GDLN Center Directors and Coordinators,
who have as one of their key roles facilitating and
moderating the learning and knowledge-sharing activities,
benefitted from a greater understanding of the technical
aspects involved in the videoconferences. By having
this understanding, the Center Directors and Coordinators
can effectively combine the technology with the organization
and delivery of their events. The technicians had the
opportunity to share their perspective and also to directly
hear the technical challenges Center Directors and Coordinators
face so they could respond as a group with the end goal
of improving the events GDLN LAC holds in the region.
